Dr Sara Giarola

BG Fellow

Sara Giarola joined the Chemical Engineering Department of Imperial College London in 2012, after gaining her PhD at the University of Padua (Italy). Prior to joining the Sustainable Gas Institute she worked on the development of sustainable systems for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into energy, chemicals and products, with a focus on modelling and optimisation of advanced biorefining systems (e.g. Organosolv and ionic liquids-based processes) and following a multiscale approach (which spans from a single plant view to a full supply chain one).

Her research interests are in the field of mathematical programming, whole systems modelling (for energy and chemicals production), simulation and optimisation. Sara is currently the lead modeler for the Institute’s new energy systems model, MUSE.
